Two inscribed stones have been found near the Church, which are now kept inside the Church. The stones show how old the site of the Church is, dating to pre-Christian times.
The Celtic stone
One stone is known as the Celtic stone as it has several crosses inscribed onto it. It is thought to have been used as a Celtic altar stone or coffin lid, which may have been thrown out by the Normans, as it was found outside of, but near to, the Churchyard.
The Roman stone
The other is the Roman stone, found in the churchyard, thought to be a gravestone to a Roman soldier, dating to about 500AD. It is inscribed in Latin: ‘HIC IACIT ULCAGNUS FI[LI]US SENOMAGLI,’ meaning ‘Here lies Ulcagnus, son of Senomaglus.’ It is also known as the Ulcagnus stone.
Service Times
In light of the latest Government advice, we have the following update with regards to events happening in all 3 churches, St Michael’s Llanfihangel-ar-Arth, St. Mary’s Pencader, St. David’s Capel Dewi:
All Sunday and weekday services are officially closed until further notice.
At this time, let us trust in God, pray for each other, look out for our neighbour and not lose heart! Let’s keep calm and stay safe. Our God is still in control and He hears our prayers. Be encouraged with these verses from the bible:
Psalm 23, verse 4:
Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff they comfort me.
and from Psalm 91: verse 1+2
Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
If you need any support during this time please get in touch (T: Vicar 01559-384858)!
God Bless you all
